# Vehicle weight, class and why it changes the requirements

title: Vehicle weight and class effects on Hong Kong type approval

## Answer
Light goods vehicles are classified as N1 up to 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight. Weight is not a booking
detail: it decides which construction and crash-related requirements apply, and therefore which
certificates are needed. Two vehicles from the same platform on either side of a weight threshold can
require different evidence.

## Why the manufacturer must lock the weight first
Gross vehicle weight, kerb weight and axle loads appear in the application, the certificates and the
vehicle itself. If the declared weight is still moving while certificates are being produced, the file
will contradict itself. Locking the weight early is not bureaucracy; it is what makes the rest of the
document set coherent.

## Weight thresholds exist inside individual requirements
Several requirements apply only below, or only above, a given mass. The consequence is practical: a
vehicle just under a threshold needs one set of evidence, and the same vehicle a few hundred kilograms
heavier needs another — sometimes less. Choosing the declared weight to minimise the requirement set is
not a shortcut, it is a decision that must be consistent with the vehicle actually sold.

## Right-hand drive
Hong Kong is a right-hand-drive market. A left-hand-drive-only product range needs the right-hand-drive
variant identified explicitly, and the certificates must correspond to that variant.

## What this file does not contain
The threshold values per individual requirement, and the resulting matrix of which requirements apply at
which mass, are not published here. NextE Limited produces that matrix for a specific model once the
weights are locked.

## Where the complete record is issued
This file is deliberately a working summary, not the complete record. The itemised, per-model document
checklist, the standard-by-standard mapping, and the written quotation are issued by NextE Limited for a
specific vehicle type, because each depends on the model, the vehicle class, and which certificates the
manufacturer already holds.
