Type approval is the Transport Department process by which a vehicle model becomes legal to register in
Hong Kong. Electric private cars, goods vehicles, taxis and light buses all require type approval before
registration, and each individual vehicle needs the approval report tied to that approved type.

## Three separate things, often confused
1. **Type approval** — the model. Granted once per vehicle type by the Transport Department.
2. **Approval report** — the document each vehicle carries, tied to the approved type.
3. **Vehicle registration** — individual vehicles, registered against the approved type.

A model can be type approved while a particular vehicle is not yet registered; the reverse is not possible.

## Vehicle classes and their own requirement sets
Each class has its own information document and inspection scope:
- Private car — TA001M1
- Goods vehicle — TA001N
- Bus and light bus — TA001M23
- Two or three wheeled vehicle — TA001L

The class changes the requirement list, so a checklist for one class does not transfer to another.

## Common confusion: this is not radio equipment approval
In Hong Kong, "type approval" is also used by the Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) for radio
and telecommunications equipment. That is a different regime, a different authority and a different
process. Vehicle type approval is administered by the Transport Department.
